Message from Davy E. Jones, Founder/Chairman:
A decade ago, Prostate Cancer Resource became the first public non-profit organization
in the United States to offer free, confidential prostate cancer screenings
to reduce the mortality rate.
Founded in 1997 in the memory of my father to prevent the devastation prostate
cancer impose on individuals and their families. Our primarily focus is to encourage
men over 35 years to take the PSA test (Prostate Specific Antigen) involve obtaining
a couple of drops of blood from nick of the finger and deposited in a Biosafe
collection card which is sent to a laboratory.
We're the only prostate cancer non-profit agency in the nation to advocate
testing from 35 years of age. Recently, David Hillier, 37, Barclay Bank executive
was diagnosed with advance prostate cancer. Pre-cancerous lesions have been
found in men who died in accidents as young as 20 years. Over 25 percent of
men autopsied who have died in their 30's were found to be affected and 55 percent
in their 40's. The lack of early screening is one reason 60 percent of the cases
that are diagnosed have already spread. Another reason for early screening,
a study indicates that the mortality rate may be higher because prostate cancer
plays an aggravating role in other ailments such as heart attacks.
Our tenth anniversary celebration includes the opening in January 2008 of
the first ever no-cost prostate cancer screening facility in Las Vegas, a city
with the highest population without health insurance. Also, the launching of
our Rapid Testing Program (RTP) which will provide test results reviewed by
licensed health physician in 72 hours and eliminate three weeks of agonizing
waiting period.
Coming soon, our website will feature a video and audio browse about the lastest
FDA approved new drugs such as Provenge by Drendron Corporation which increases
the survival rate We are proud of the numerous recognitions our screening campaigns
in California received from former Governors:Hon. Gray Davis and Hon. Pete Wilson,
California State Assembly, S.F. Board of Supervisors, California Pacific Medical
Center, Ira and Leonore Gershwin Fund, (partial list).
As we commemorate our 10th year of continuous services, I would like to extend
a heart felt thanks to our past sponsors such as Walgreens, Safeway, St. Anthony
Foundation, Ira and Leonore Geshwin Fund, Glide Memorial, California Pacific
Medical Center et al for their past financial support for our free screening
program.
We look forward to serving you in the future.
